Esophagus/stomach junction

At the junction of the esophagus and stomach the stratified squamous epithelium of the esophagus changes abruptly to the simple columnar epithelium of the stomach.

The arrows labeled sc point to the base of the simple columnar epithelium of the stomach.

The somewhat ragged look of the stomach epithelium is an artifact of slide preparation.
