The epiphyseal plate is a plate of hyaline cartilage that allows bones to grow in length.

In an epiphyseal plate new cartilage is added at the epiphyseal side of the plate, while the cartilage at the diaphyseal side of the plate degenerates and is replaced by bone.

e = epiphysis

ep = epiphyseal plate

d = diaphysis
